MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Canadian hockey player Josh Nicholls paid a courtesy call on President Aquino on Thursday.

Nicholls, a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, gave the President an autographed hockey stick and taught him how to hold it.

It had a Philippine flag sticker on it and a line that says: “To my President P-Noy.” Nicholls is the first Filipino to have played in the National Hockey League in Canada.

Local law Enforcement help lead the torch portion of the ceremony and Governor Brian Schweitzer spoke to the athletes and families.

Competition began this morning at Rocky Mountain College.
More than one-thousand Special Olympic athletes are participating in this week’s games.

The mayors of New York and Newark traded sporting trash talk over Twitter Wednesday night as the Rangers squared off at Madison Square Garden against the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of the NHL Eastern Conference finals.

“Not even @CoryBooker can save you tonight, @NHLDevils #LetsGoRangers,” Mayor Bloomberg tweeted at the start of the game to Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, where the New Jersey Devils play.

Three hours later, after the Devils evened the series by beating the Rangers 3-2, Booker took to Twitter with his reply.

“Hey Mike Devils don’t need me 4 the save, they have Brodeur!,” referring to the Martin Brodeur, the Devils’ goaltender, who had a stellar game.

Manny Pacquiao clarified his recent comments about same-sex marriage, issuing a statement in which he said he has nothing against gay people but opposes same-sex marriage.

“I’m not against gay people,” Pacquiao, the champion boxer and Filipino legislator said in a statement, written by trainer and writer Keith Terceira, on his website. “I have a relative who is also gay. We can’t help it if they were born that way. What I’m critical of are actions that violate the word of God. I only gave out my opinion that same-sex marriage is against the law of God.”
